Four movements:
I.  Allegro con brio.  Sonata form.  Fragmentary themes, lack of conventional melody
II. A set of “double” or “alternating” variations.  Theme 1:  flowing and lyrical; Theme 2:  more like a fanfare, with trumpets and drums
III. A scherzo in all but name.  Uses several themes based on the central short-short-short-long motive.
IV.  Sonata form.  Exposition – Development – Unexpected return of music from end of second movement – Recapitulation
