About Me


Franklin Robert Sartain (b. 1993) is currently a Music Composition student seeking a Bachelor of Music degree at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU). He is studying at the university with Dr. Stephen Lias. He graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in Houston, Texas in 2012. At HSPVA, he studied trumpet performance. Frank was a member of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Big Band Ensemble and Jazz Combo programs.

Frank developed his interest in composing while enrolled at HSPVA during his freshman year.

He composed numerous pieces during high school including three of which were performed in front of live audiences by fellow musicians. His musical influences are Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Lorne Balfe, Louie Gray Beats, Ludwig van Beethoven, Deadmau5, Claude Debussy, Two Steps from Hell, James Newton Howard, Scott Joplin, Matt Maher, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Mark Petrie, Valentine Productions, Steve Reich, Igor Stravinsky, Pyotr llyich Tchaikovsky, Brian Tyler, Harry Gregson-Williams, and Hans Zimmer.

His interests in composition include teaching and composing for film, trailers, video games, television, and commercials.

Frank is a member of NACUSA (The National Association of Composers/USA) where several of his compositions have been played on their Web Radio Playlist. His piece, My Desire, was selected to be performed at the NACUSA National Conference 2013, and has been performed numerous times at SFASU. Maria and The Bear and To The Death were used in the 2013 SFA Downstage Theatre production Wit. His piano trio, Family Vacation Gone Wrong was premiered at one of the final concerts of California Summer Music in July. On November 21st, his composition Epic Journey for trombone and piano was be premiered in London as part of the Brand New Music for Winds concert.

Frank spent a semester studying abroad in Hobart, Australia at the Conservatorium of Music (Con), part of the University of Tasmania with Dr. Maria Grenfell (UTAS). He recently had a piece for piano four hands and drum set premiered as well as an orchestral work at the Con at UTAS. Also, his tune, Livin’ In Paradise was played during a gig at Source Community Wholefoods, a small market in Hobart. In addition, he won the Flying Start Competition which is hosted by a Tasmanian ensemble known as “Note-Aurius”.

Outside of composing, he is an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 549 in the Sam Houston Area Council (Texas) and a Guinness World Record Holder.
